RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday said assistance of international partners was vital for rescue and rehabilitation of the flood affected people in Pakistan.

He said this while talking to Ambassador of Japan Wada Mitsuhiro who called on him in Rawalpindi.

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, regional security situation and collaboration in humanitarian measures were discussed.

Thanking Japan for its support to flood-affected people of the country, the army chief said Pakistan valued Japan’s role in global and regional affairs and looked forward to enhance its bilateral relations with it.

Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador expressed his grief over the devastation caused by floods in Pakistan and offered sincere condolence to the families of the victims. He offered full support to the people of Pakistan.

On the other hand, Co-chairperson Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in New York on Thursday.

The Prime Minister apprised him about human cost of climate change, food insecurity triggered by floods and plight of flood-stricken women and children.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.

He appreciated Pakistan Army’s efforts in assisting civil administration in rescue and relief efforts in flood-affected areas.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan thanks Special UN Envoy Angelina Jolie and other unsung heroes for becoming voice of millions of people whose lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by raging floodwaters.

In a tweet on Thursday, he said, “We will forever remember their empathy and compassion for suffering humanity.”
