KARACHI: Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon on Friday decided to increase milk price by Rs10 a litre, Bol News reported.

Acceding to the pressure of dairy farmers, the Karachi commissioner increased the milk rate from Rs170 to Rs180 a litre. Only this year, the commissioner has increased official milk price by Rs50 a litre.

In October, he had jacked up the milk price from Rs120 to Rs170 a litre. Whereas, milk is already being sold from Rs180 to Rs200 a litre in the megalopolis.

Issuing a notification on October 26, Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon had said price of milk had been fixed at Rs170 a litre in the megalopolis.

On the other hand, President Dairy Farmers Shakir Umar Gujjar had rejected the notification saying that dairy farmers pooh-poohed the commissioner’s decision.

The commissioner, while presiding a meeting regarding milk price, had said he had consulted all the stake holders to fix the price at Rs170. “Hence, the official price of milk is Rs170 a litre,” he had said.

Iqbal had said the official price would be implemented, come what may. Nobody would be allowed to challenge writ of the state, he had maintained.

On September 8, milk sellers in Karachi and Hyderabad had increased the prices of milk and curd by Rs10 and Rs40 to Rs180 and Rs280 respectively.
