PML-N decides to challenge LHC verdict about Punjab CM in top court
LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) on Saturday decided to challenge the Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict about the Punjab chief minister in the Supreme Court, Bol News reported quoting sources as saying.
An important meeting presided by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed the national political situation. Shehbaz Sharif also met PML-N members of the National Assembly.
Sources said the meeting was apprised that if Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was given full powers regarding the vote of confidence, then he would influence the election.
Counsels of the PML-N have reportedly prepared an application to file writ petition in the apex court.
Those who met PM Shehbaz Sharif included Federal Minister for Aviation and Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Punjab Governor Baligh ur Rehman, Tariq Bashir Cheema and Ayaz Sadiq.
On December 23, the Lahore High Court (LHC) had restored Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and his cabinet right away and suspended the notifications of the Punjab governor and chief secretary.
The LHC had issued the order after getting assurance from Parvez Elahi to not dissolve the Punjab Assembly.
The LHC wanted an undertaking from Elahi that he would not dissolve the assembly because if he would resort to the move, it could deepen the ongoing political turmoil in the province.
A five-member bench headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh and including Justices Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Asim Hafeez and Muzamil Akhtar Shabir heard the case.
The court had taken two breaks — 10 minutes and an hour — and asked Elahi’s counsel Barrister Ali Zafar to consult his client about the undertaking.
