LAHORE: President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday met PTI Chairman Imran Khan and discussed the political situation including the dissolution of the provincial assemblies.
The meeting was being keenly observed as the president was playing a key role in negotiating with the government after Imran Khan announced to dissolve the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies.
President Arif Alvi arrived at Imran Khan’s residence in Zaman Park. He informed the PTI Chairman about his meetings with PML-N leader Ishaq Dar.
He also informed about his meeting with federal ministers Ayaz Sadiq and Azam Nazir Tarar earlier in the day during which the PML-N leaders conveyed the government’s stance on the political crisis.
Imran Khan informed the president about the meeting of PTI senior leadership. He discussed the alliance with the PML-Q and Punjab Chief Minister.
Earlier today, Imran Khan ended all speculation and announced to unveil date for the dissolution of the assemblies on December 17. The final date for the dissolution of the provincial assemblies will be announced during a public gathering Liberty Chowk, Lahore.
The PTI chairman held a crucial session with the senior party leaders who advised him to dissolve both assemblies on the same date. Imran Khan said he held consultation with all party leaders to get their opinion. He reaffirmed that the assemblies will be dissolved in December.
The meeting also discussed the legal aspects of the dissolution. Legal Adviser Dr Babar Awan briefed regarding the constitutional and legal issues of the move. Imran Khan eventually decided to unveil the date for dissolving the provincial assemblies on December 17.
After after the announcement, PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi arrived to meet Imran Khan and vowed to abide by the decision to dissolve the Punjab Assembly.
Imran Khan also apprised the PML-Q leader of the senior party leadership meeting. He took Moonis Elahi into confidence on the decisions taken during the meeting.
Moonis Elahi vowed to abide by the decision and said they have entrusted Imran Khan with the decision to make the announcement.
Earlier in the day, Federal Ministers Ayaz Sadiq and Azam Nazeer Tarar called on President Dr Arif Alvi in Islamabad and conveyed the government’s stance amid the political turmoil.
The PML-N leaders urged President Alvi play his role to in resolving the political crisis. They requested him to find solutions within the prevailing governance system rather than dissolving the assemblies. The president asked all political parties to exhibit political maturity.
