Shariat Court directs MoHR to setup protection center for transgenders
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Shariat Court (FSC) directed the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) to take immediate steps to establish a protection center for elderly and underage transgenders.
The Federal Shariat Court in Islamabad heard the applications related to declaring the Transgender Act 2018 illegal.
A two-member bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Shariat Court Syed Muhammad Anwar directed the Ministry of Human Rights to take immediate steps to build an elderly and underage transgender protection center.
The Chief Justice Shariat Court ordered that the Secretary Human Rights should meet the convener of the committee constituted today Zamrad Khan and the SOPs of the protection centers should be made immediately.
The court said that the Ministry of Human Rights should submit a report based on the building of the Protection Center and the SOPs at the next hearing. Zamard Khan is successfully running his protection center.
Acting Chief Justice of Shariat Court Syed Muhammad Anwar said that “If the government cannot do anything for transgenders, let them know. Everyone wants to do something for transgenders, not just the ministry. The report submitted by the Ministry of Human Rights is not in accordance with the court order.”
Secretary Human Rights told the court that the Ministry of Human Rights has established a committee under the chairmanship of Zamrad Khan for Transgender Protection Centers on the court order.
Zumard Khan said that no building has been provided by the Ministry of Human Rights so far for protection centers. The MoHR should provide the building while rest of the facilities will be arranged.
The Federal Shariat Court adjourned further hearing of the case till January 17.
