KARACHI: The Sindh government has finally decided to conduct the second phase of local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad on January 15 (tomorrow).

The provincial government made the decision after discussing the legal aspects and eventually decided not to bring an ordinance to delay the polls.

The government decided against introducing an ordinance to postpone the polls any further and will conduct them as scheduled.

The provincial government ordered the district administration and police to cooperate with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Sindh government officials said they will not take any steps against the constitution. It was also decided that the government will provide full-proof security despite the threat alert.

The Sindh government has once again urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone the LG polls citing security threats.

In a letter to the election commission, the Sindh government requested to postpone LG polls as the Army and Rangers personnel required for elections were not available. The provincial government refused to provide security at ‘sensitive’ polling station.

The ECP turned down the request to once again delay polls and ruled that the local bodies elections will be held as per schedule.

It directed Interior Ministry to ensure the deployment of Rangers and Army on highly sensitive polling stations. The Sindh government eventually announced to hold the polls as scheduled.

Amid the security situation, the Ministry of Interior ordered deployment of Frontier Constabulary (FC) troops outside all highly sensitive and sensitive polling stations during elections in Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta divisions.
