SUKKUR: Sindh High Court Sukkur Bench has restrained the Culture Department from holding cultural programmes abroad.
Justice Salahuddin Panhwar heard a case against organizing culture programmes as part of the week-long centenary celebrations of Mohenjodaro in foreign countries.
The court stop the Sindh Department of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities and from holding cultural programs abroad including London, Paris, and Canada.
The court has also stopped Arts Council Karachi from organizing programs outside Sindh. The Arts Council had recently organized a conference in Lahore.
Why Sindh’s money is being spent abroad, asked Justice Salahuddin Panhwar during the hearing. He said the cultural heritage is being destroyed and libraries are being closed in the province.
The court issued a restraining order on organizing cultural programs outside the country. The court summoned Secretary Culture and Commissioner Sukkur Division for the next hearing.
The court has summoned the concerned authorities including President Arts Council Karachi in personal capacity to appear before the court.
The Sindh government’s culture department recently invited bids to engage event managers to help it organise a weeklong centenary celebration of Mohenjodaro next month in London and Paris.
In November 2021, Sindh Cultural Department had decided to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of Mohenjodaro in 1922.
Sindh’s Minister of Culture Sardar Ali Shah had chaired a meeting to chalk out the centennial celebrations of excavation of Mohenjodaro.
UNESCO Director and archaeologists from various parts of the world were invited to attend the celebrations to mark the centenary of the discovery of Mohenjodaro.
Sindh’s Culture Department had decided to publish two books on Mohenjodaro and released an animated film on the centennial celebrations.
Centennial celebrations of Mohenjodaro were held in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar and Islamabad. It was also decided that the concluding ceremony of the centenary will be organized in in Paris,
Sir John Hubert Marshall, the Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, had oversaw the excavations of Mohenjodaro and Harappa, two of the main cities that comprise the Indus Valley Civilization.
