ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had a telephonic conversation with PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and discussed the political situation in the country.

Both leaders had a detailed discussion on the current political situation after the announcement of the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PDM chief has already raised reservations over the polls and has criticized the judiciary for the verdict on election date.

Sources revealed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman informed Nawaz Sharif regarding his position on the general elections in the two provinces. The JUI-F chief insisted that the allied parties in the coalition government should take decisions under a joint strategy.

The PDM chief reiterated that holding elections without conducting the census and new delimitation of constituencies make the doubtful and controversial.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman demanded the federal government should approach Supreme Court and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in this regard.

Sources revealed that Nawaz Sharif agreed with the PDM chief’s remark and assured to discuss them with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari.

It must be mentioned that PD Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman demanded to postpone the upcoming elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in view of terrorism spike in the country, stating that the law and order situation is not suitable for elections.

Maulana Fazl also said election should be held within the timeframe provided in the Constitution, but in the same breath said decisions are made in view of the country’s situation.

He said it was surprising that the judiciary took suo motu notice of the election date. He said it was presented as a 3-2 decision but they believed that it was a 4-3 decision as two judges had rescued themselves.

He said that the Supreme Court took a suo motu notice over the election date of KP and Punjab, adding that the notice may have been taken on the polls.

He blamed Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government for the prevailing economic crisis and ruining the economy. He said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is preparing our budget and controlling the prices.

He said Rs80 billion was being demanded for publishing ballot papers at a time when the state was unable to provide bread to the poor.
