PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali on Friday backed off from holding elections as he has written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding delaying elections because of nine reasons, Bol News reported.

In the letter, he did not give any date for elections. The KP governor directed the ECP to hold consultations with all the stakeholders. He suggested resolving the issues of census and absence of security staff. He ordered the election commission to taken all the stake holders including the Ministry of Defence and Interior into confidence.

Earlier, the governor had assured of holding provincial assembly elections on May 28.

On March 14, in accordance with a ruling of the Supreme Court, the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Haji Ghulam Ali, had proposed to organize the elections on May 28, in a meeting with the ECP.

According to the details, a consultative meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan regarding the elections was held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in which the date of the elections was suggested in light of the Supreme Court’s decision.

Sources had reported that the Governor raised concern over the current state of KP’s law and order and expressed his uncertainty over holding the elections in such circumstances.

Governor Haji Ghulam Ali had reported that the Election Commission was briefed about the security concerns prior, yet had not taken responsibility for making all the arrangements for the elections.

Furthermore, a request was made by the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to defer the elections but was denied by the Election Commission due to the Supreme Court’s decision.

Haji Ghulam Ali had expressed that he was under immense pressure from the entire nation, he had said “I have fulfilled my constitutional responsibility regarding the election, and I have informed the Election Commission about my concerns.”
