LAHORE: The ban on the speeches of Imran Khan imposed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Imran Khan’s lawyer Barrister Ahmed Pansuta filed the petition in the Lahore High Court and PEMRA was made a party.
The petition maintained that the ban on speech is a violation of the fundamental rights in the Constitution. “The Constitution of Pakistan allows citizens to freedom of expression,” it added.
PTI took position in the petition that the ban on freedom of expression will lead to chaos and political agitation in the country.
“In the current political situation, the country cannot afford chaos by this kind of restriction.”
Yesterday, PEMRA banned the broadcast of the speeches, talks and statements of Imran Khan on all TV channels with immediate effect as he is constantly criticising the state institutions.
In a statement issued by the media watchdog on Sunday, Imran Khan’s live and recorded speeches, statements and talks have been banned under Section 27 of PEMRA Ordinance.
