Re-polls in Sindh
KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has increased the number of Union Committees in Karachi, BOL News reported.
A notification has been issued by Additional Chief Secretary Local Government & Housing Town regarding the increase in the union committees in Karachi Division.
The government has increase the number of union councils by 53. There were already 246 UCs in Karachi while the number has increased to 299. The notification said the increase will apply to “future” Local Government (LG) elections.
The increase in the number of UCs was a demand of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM-P) which has demanded changes to the local bodies system. The party boycott the LG polls in Karachi held earlier his year in January.
Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman criticized the decision to increase the number of union councils in Karachi.
In a twee, he said the PPP has issues notification to increase 53 UCs to give face saving to the MQM by stating it will be for the next elections.
“Do not fool the people of Karachi,” Hafiz Naeem. He said after the new census, all national, provincial and local government constituencies will be re-determined.
Last month, the PPP expressed its willingness to review the local government constituencies as per the demands of the MQM.
The PPP delegation met with MQM leaders for talks between the two allied parties on the issue of delimitations. Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah held a meeting on the issue of increasing union councils in Karachi.
Earlier, the MQM had called off its protest call after the PPP expressed willingness to review the LG system.
The local bodies elections were held in Karachi despite the MQM’s boycott, following which the PPP and Jamaat-e-Isalmi emerged as the two largest parties and are vying for the post of Karachi mayor.
