PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry remained safe from being indicted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in contempt case.

ECP had issued notices regarding indictment proceedings in the contempt of the election commission and chief election commissioner case.

The election body issued summon notice to the three suspects, but during the hearing conducted by a four-member ECP bench, none of the suspects or Imran Khan’s lawyer appeared.

Imran Khan’s lawyer sought an adjournment, submitting a written report explaining his absence.

Interior Secretary Aftab Durrani personally submitted the report, and when asked about holding the hearing in jail due to potential security concerns, the secretary agreed, stating that the ministry permitted such arrangements.

The ECP emphasized its independence, noting that it operates under constitutional rules and the Elections Act.

The commission inquired about the legal permission to conduct hearings in jails, to which the interior secretary requested time to seek the ministry’s opinion.

It was revealed that Fawad Chaudhry was also in Adiala Jail, prompting the ECP to express its intention to issue an order on this matter. Asad Umar had no representative appear before the commission, with his lawyer seeking an adjournment.

PTI lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, expressing limited access to Imran Khan in jail, requested the ECP to issue an order for a meeting.

The commission suggested going to the jail for a hearing to ensure all facilities for the lawyer.

Shoaib Shaheen highlighted alleged restrictions on PTI rallies, advocating for a level playing field.

Subsequently, the ECP adjourned the case hearing until December 6.
