Pakistanis in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are facing a sudden setback as unverified reports suggest a suspension of labor visas for unskilled workers from Pakistan.

The UAE, home to over 10 percent of Pakistan’s expatriates, has allegedly imposed this ban without providing any reasons, leaving many job seekers in a state of uncertainty.

The Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association expressed concern, labeling the move as bad news for those seeking employment opportunities in the UAE.

Adnan Paracha, the association’s spokesperson, revealed that the UAE Immigration Department implemented the ban abruptly, leading to the rejection of job applications. The working class in Pakistan, already grappling with economic challenges, is expected to bear the brunt of this new policy.

Paracha highlighted the significant financial impact on Pakistan, emphasizing that the country receives over $450 million in remittances from the UAE every month. The sudden restriction on unskilled labor visas could jeopardize the livelihoods of many Pakistani workers and their families.

This development comes on the heels of the UAE imposing a ban on Dubai visit visas for residents of 20 nations, citing concerns over overstaying and illegal working activities. Reports also suggest specific background checks for Pakistani visa applicants, adding to the worries of the expatriate community.

The Pakistani diaspora in the UAE is one of the largest and most influential expatriate communities, with a long history of migration for employment and improved living standards.

While Pakistani officials had previously dismissed such reports, the current situation raises concerns about the future of Pakistani workers in the Gulf nation.
