Internet services are experiencing significant slowdowns nationwide, with users reporting degraded performance across various social media platforms. Additionally, the blackout of X (formerly Twitter) has persisted for six days, defying the Sindh High Court’s order to restore access. Meanwhile, VPN services are also being blocked across Pakistan.
X Continues to Be Blocked
The Pakistani government initially blocked access to X on February 17, 2024, following revelations of election result rigging involving Rawalpindi’s Commissioner. Despite the absence of proper notification or justification for the block, it remains in place. The government has yet to communicate any plans for restoration, despite the SHC’s order to lift the ban. Moreover, officials are providing ambiguous information to media outlets regarding the restrictions.
VPN Services Blocked
The situation is further complicated by the widespread blocking of virtual private network (VPN) services across the country. In addition to restricting access to X, the government has begun blocking major VPN services, hampering users’ ability to connect to any servers.
Slow Internet Services
Internet speeds are notably sluggish, with performance deterioration observed throughout Pakistan. However, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has not acknowledged the issue. While internet service providers (ISPs) maintain that there are no service disruptions, users continue to voice concerns about slow connectivity on social media platforms.
