Heavy rain, hailstorm likely in Lahore, Punjab
The Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) is enhancing its preparedness in anticipation of the forecasted rainfall on March 1. Engineer Asadullah Khan, the COO of KW&SC, has urged all officers, including the Chief Engineer of Sewerage, to be more vigilant.
Engineer Khan emphasized the importance of ensuring all equipment, including jetting, suction, rodding, sewer cleaning machines, and dewatering pumps, is in full working order. He also instructed supervising engineers, executive engineers, and their teams to remain present in their designated areas.
To prepare for the upcoming rainfall, machinery has been strategically positioned along the main highways of the city to reduce potential disruptions for residents. Drain cleaning activities have already started in anticipation of the rain. Additionally, water supply and sewerage pumping stations have been fitted with backup generators to mitigate potential power outages.
The KW&SC spokesperson emphasized the difficulties arising from the city’s sewage system, which isn’t built to manage rainwater drainage. The buildup of solid waste, debris, and trash frequently obstructs sewer lines during rain, making the situation more complex. To tackle this issue, KW&SC has initiated measures to secure manholes on major roads.
In light of the rain prediction, Karachi’s Deputy Mayor, Salman Abdullah Murad, declared the cancellation of all leaves for relevant officers and staff, urging them to remain vigilant. He disclosed the establishment of an emergency desk by the Department of Municipal Services during a high-level meeting.
