Karachi experiences light to heavy monsoon rain

On Tuesday, Karachi experienced intermittent light to heavy monsoon rains throughout the day, starting late Monday night, which made the port city’s weather more pleasant.

These fresh monsoon showers, accompanied by lightning and thunder, affected almost all parts of the metropolis. Gadap, Orangi Town, Surjani Town, and North Karachi were among the areas that received heavy rains.

According to the Met Office, Gadap—near Baqai Hospital—recorded 42.4mm of rain, while Orangi Town, Surjani Town, and North Karachi received 29.4mm, 24.1mm, and 24mm respectively.

Other areas affected included II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Shahrea Faisal, Old City Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Tariq Road, Malir, Korangi, Quaidabad, and Scheme 33.

The sporadic showers continue in some areas, with predictions of more rain on Wednesday across the port city.

Heavy rains caused flooding on streets and major roads, leading to traffic disruptions in affected areas. The Karachi Traffic Police advised citizens to take precautions while driving and to avoid unnecessary travel during the rains.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed immediate arrangements for rainwater drainage in all cities and instructed government officers and relevant staff to remain in the field until the water is fully drained from their designated locations. He also directed the Karachi Traffic Police to take necessary steps to prevent traffic disruptions due to the rains.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast indicates that the prevailing low-pressure system could bring moderate to heavy showers to Karachi until Thursday (August 1).

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued an advisory highlighting that monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal are expected to penetrate central and southern parts of the country from July 27 and continue until August 3. The NDMA also warned of potential urban flooding in Karachi and other cities across the country during this period.
