Sheikh Waqas Akram may lead Public Accounts Committee
ISLAMABAD: The PTI-backed opposition nominated their candidate for the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday, according to sources.
Sheikh Waqas Akram was chosen as the PAC chairman nominee, prompting the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to consult its allies regarding this decision.
Sources indicated that the federal government is ready to appoint an opposition leader as PAC chairman. Government insiders mentioned that if the nomination comes from outside the opposition leader, a four-member panel should be proposed by the opposition.
Previously, the federal government reached out to the PTI-backed opposition in the National Assembly (NA) for the appointment of a new PAC chairman.
Sources said that Chief Whip Tariq Fazal wrote a letter to the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, requesting four names for the PAC chairman position.
The letter emphasized that the government seeks senior and experienced individuals for the role and that the selection will be made through mutual agreement. A copy of the letter was also sent to PTI Chief Whip, Amir Dogar.
