ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a big rise in electricity tariffs across Pakistan, including Karachi.
According to NEPRA’s notification, the price per unit has been raised by Rs. 1.74 as part of the quarterly adjustment for April to June. This additional cost will be spread over three months, from September to November.
The hike will place an extra financial burden of Rs. 43.23 billion on consumers nationwide. Previously, NEPRA approved K-Electric’s (KE) request for a tariff increase for Karachi residents, and the utility has now sought a further Rs. 3.09 hike under the fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for July. If approved, this amount will be reflected in November’s electricity bills and could add over Rs. 10 billion in additional costs for Karachi consumers.
Prior to this, NEPRA had approved KE’s requests for fuel charge adjustments in May and June, raising electricity prices by Rs. 2.59 per unit for May and Rs. 3.17 per unit for June. These earlier increases already imposed an additional burden of over Rs. 6.2 billion on Karachi residents.
