KARACHI: A low-pressure system that began forming over the Arabian Sea on Sunday has intensified into a tropical depression. Should it further develop into a storm, it will be named “Dana,” a name proposed by Qatar.

On Saturday, the Met Office issued a second alert concerning the system, reporting that the low pressure in the central Arabian Sea had strengthened, with its distance from Karachi reducing from 1,000 to 900 kilometers.

While hot and dry weather is expected to persist across most of Sindh on Sunday, certain areas like Karachi, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, and nearby regions may experience rainfall accompanied by wind and thunderstorms by evening or night. On Monday, similar weather conditions, with rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, are expected in these areas.

As of now, there is no indication that the system will impact the coastal regions of Sindh and Balochistan. The Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi continues to monitor the situation.

If the system does develop into a storm, it will be named “Dana,” an Arabic word meaning a precious and beautiful pearl.

According to weather officials, the depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical cyclone, moving across the central Arabian Sea on Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15.

Experts have identified two possible paths for the tropical depression. The first trajectory could take it westward towards the central Arabian Sea and then toward Oman’s coastline.

The second possible path involves a westerly-southwesterly movement towards Socotra Island in Yemen.
