MQM-P backs Maulana Fazl ur Rehman on madrassa bill
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has expressed support for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s position on the Madrassa Registration Bill.
An MQM-P delegation, led by Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, met with Maulana Fazl ur Rehman at his residence in Islamabad. The delegation included Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Farooq Sattar, and Amin-ul-Haq.
During the meeting, the leaders discussed the country’s current political situation and concerns regarding the Madrassa Registration Bill.
At a joint press conference, Fazl ur Rehman thanked the MQM-P for hearing his position. He criticized the government for complicating the 26th Amendment related to religious seminaries, stating, “The law passed in Parliament was disrupted by the presidency. We demand its gazette notification first, and amendments can follow.”
Rehman confirmed that the MQM-P had agreed to support his stance, saying, “There is consensus that MQM-P will take our position forward.”
Dr. Siddiqui highlighted the need to strengthen local body elections to improve grassroots democracy, adding, “We are committed to ensuring basic democracy.”
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori noted that the government had suggested bringing madrassas under the Ministry of Education and mentioned efforts to resolve the matter by involving the education minister.
Rehman emphasized the need to advance the legislation without obstacles, stating, “The madrassa act should be accepted as it is, and discussions must proceed smoothly.”
Dr. Siddiqui concluded by saying, “Maulana Fazl ur Rehman’s arguments regarding the Madrassa Registration Bill are logical, and we will support them on their merits.”
