After the success of electric buses in Punjab, Lahore is preparing to start an electric tram service to give people more comfortable and eco-friendly travel options.
The tram will run from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig as part of a new urban transport plan. To improve traffic flow, underpasses along Canal Road will be reorganized into single lanes, and the Jail Road underpass will be shifted from the left to the right side. The tram will use the far left lane of Canal Road so it won’t disturb regular traffic. Roads near bus stops will also be widened for easier boarding.
Authorities are reviewing technical details of the route, and there’s also a proposal for an underground road from Jallo to Harbanspura to boost city connectivity.
The first Chinese-made electric tram has already arrived in Lahore and will be tested on Canal Road. It has three connected compartments, can carry up to 250 passengers, and runs fully on electricity. With a quick 10-minute charge, it can travel 25–27 kilometers.
A pilot run is already underway near Lahore Airport, with the tram assembled at the Ali Town Depot. During the trial period, rides will be free. If the project succeeds, fares will be introduced for regular service.
