KARACHI: A major security breach took place at Jinnah International Airport after a passenger managed to escape from the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The passenger, identified as Abdul Samad, had been detained after his name appeared on the immigration watchlist. He was wanted in connection with a murder case registered in Khairpur just days earlier.

Officials said Abdul Samad had tried to travel to Jeddah on a Saudi Airlines flight SV-705 on the night between August 12 and 13. FIA officers stopped him, handcuffed him, and kept him under watch at the airport. However, he managed to slip away during the night shift by blending into the heavy passenger traffic.

Shockingly, no other security agency attempted to stop him as he walked out of the airport still wearing handcuffs.

Following the incident, a female sub-inspector who was the shift in-charge, along with a head constable, were suspended and directed to report to the FIA zonal office. An inquiry has been launched against them for negligence.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, FIA officials in Faisalabad arrested Hassan Raza, who was wanted in a Rs 36.2 million bank fraud. He was caught in the Hasanpura area.

According to investigators, Raza, along with two bank officials already in custody, created fake accounts and withdrew $128,000 from a citizen’s account at the bank’s Gatt Wala branch. He is also facing charges in eight separate robbery cases.
