KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered an inquiry into the huge spending on road-cutting projects across Karachi, the News reported.

Official documents show that the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) paid Rs 13.43 billion to 20 towns in Karachi for road cutting and repair work. Among them, New Karachi Town received the highest share of Rs 3.55 billion, followed by North Nazimabad with Rs 2.35 billion. Lyari Town got Rs 1.02 billion, Jinnah Town Rs 730 million, and Malir Town Rs 620 million. Other towns such as Chanesar, Saddar, Landhi, Shah Faisal, Orangi, Baldia, and Korangi also received large amounts.

When asked about the spending, officials claimed that most of the roads had been repaired. But on the ground, no newly built or repaired roads could be seen. The CM expressed displeasure and warned that towns must use the funds for proper road construction and would not be allowed to misuse the money.

The Sindh government confirmed that nearly Rs 14 billion had been allocated for road cutting in Karachi and promised strict action to ensure transparency.

Meanwhile, Monday’s heavy rain worsened the city’s crumbling infrastructure. A newly built road in Liaquatabad collapsed, potholes appeared on the stretch from Liaquatabad Post Office to Sindhi Hotel, and repair work from the Post Office to Teen Hatti has not even started. In Nazimabad, water remains stuck in the main underpass, while the one near Sir Syed College is still unusable.

At Nipa Chowrangi, rainwater turned the area into a pond, bringing traffic to a halt. Commuters from Safora to Hasan Square faced severe problems as sanitation workers were seen sitting idle instead of clearing the mess.

The downpour once again highlighted the poor state of Karachi’s infrastructure and the failure of timely action from the authorities.
