LAHORE: Punjab is all set to launch an electric taxi scheme within the next 15 days, Transport Minister Bilal Yasin announced at Pakistan’s first-ever Transport Expo, News reported.

The new scheme, part of Punjab’s Transport 2030 Vision, aims to create jobs and promote eco-friendly travel. Under the plan, new electric taxis and bikes will be introduced, mainly to help unemployed individuals. To make things easier, the government will offer the vehicles on interest-free instalments so that low-income groups can also benefit.

Bilal Yasin also revealed that Lahore’s first tram service is expected to roll out by February next year. In its initial phase, the tram will run along Jail Road and Main Boulevard, with plans to expand to Canal Road later.

The Transport Expo also highlighted big projects for the future, including the construction of 41 modern bus depots across Punjab. Starting December 2025, electric buses will begin service, with the province aiming to run 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030. Testing for driverless vehicles and the development of 1,000 charging stations are also part of the plan.

With these initiatives, the Punjab government is working to shift 80% of its transport network to electric by 2030, making travel both greener and more affordable.
