Doha: Israel carried out an airstrike in the Qatari capital, Doha, targeting senior Hamas leaders while they were discussing a proposed Gaza ceasefire deal. The attack claimed the life of senior Hamas figure Khalil al-Hayya.
According to international media reports, Israeli fighter jets launched the strike to eliminate top Hamas officials. At the time of the attack, the Hamas delegation was reviewing a recent U.S. proposal intended to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The reports added that while the meeting in Doha was underway, Israeli forces were simultaneously pushing forward with plans to capture Gaza City. Earlier in the morning, the Israeli military had issued evacuation orders to civilians in northern Gaza, a move observers see as an attempt to derail any peace efforts.
The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the airstrike with support from its domestic intelligence agency, Shin Bet. The statement said the targeted leaders had been guiding Hamas operations for years, and such actions would continue until the group is defeated.
The escalation comes just days after Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir announced that Hamas leaders living abroad would also be targeted. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar claimed that Israel had accepted the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal.
Speaking to an international news agency, a senior Hamas official said the attack in Doha struck at the very moment the group’s leadership was considering U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed ceasefire plan for Gaza.
