To honor Nelson Mandela, a legendary anti-apartheid crusader and former president of South Africa, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now known as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are anticipated to be in New York today.

Today is Nelson Mandela International Day, and the General Assembly plenary will hold a two-hour casual gathering to commemorate this occasion. According to the UN website, Prince Harry will provide the keynote message.

In order to celebrate Mr. Mandela’s life and legacy, the UN General Assembly created the day in 2009.

The South African president, who was 91 at the time, requested his supporters to honor him by giving to their towns.

Amina J. Mohammed, the deputy secretary-general, and Abdulla Shahid, the president of the general assembly, will both make remarks during the session, which will start at 3pm BST (10am EST).

Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté of Guinea and Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis of Greece will each receive the 2020 UN Nelson Mandela Prize at the two-hour ceremony.

People who have committed their lives to serving humanity are honored with this award, which is given out every five years.

Taking action and igniting change will be the main themes of the special event held at the UN’s New York headquarters.

Prince Harry is anticipated to discuss the significant legacy of the South African politician in his speech. The leader spent 27 years in prison for fighting against the country’s segregationist laws that affected non-white inhabitants.

The UN mission for South Africa stated that the focus of his talks “would be on the memories and legacy of Mandela and what can be gained from his battle and his life that will help us meet the current problems in the world today.”
