Lady Susan Hussey ready for comeback after racist dialogues
According to a statement from Buckingham Palace on Friday, Prince William’s godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, met with the woman who had received “unacceptable” remarks concerning her race and nationality at a royal reception last month to express her heartfelt regret.
After Ngozi Fulani, a British-born employee of a domestic abuse support organization, revealed that Lady Susan Hussey, 83, had repeatedly asked her “what part of Africa are you from?” at an event hosted by King Charles’ wife Camilla, Susan Hussey resigned from her position in the British royal family’s household.
It was unclear if Lady Susan had been given her position back.
The statements were “unacceptable and deeply regrettable,” according to Buckingham Palace, but the two women had a “warm and understanding” meeting on Friday.
The palace released a statement in which it claimed, “Lady Susan has pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the issues in this area.”
“Ms Fulani, who has unfairly received the most appalling torrent of abuse on social media and elsewhere, has accepted this apology and appreciates that no malice was intended.”
Following claims of racism against the royal family made by Prince Harry and Meghan, the younger son of Charles, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 and again in their Netflix documentary series that was broadcast this month, the event occurred.
In response to the allegations in the Winfrey interview, William, Charles’s eldest son and the heir to the throne, said, “We’re very much not a racist family,” while the Palace promised to promote diversity and hire more people of colour.
The royals, who have been subjected to a slew of fresh allegations from Harry about his cousins in the Netflix series, will be happy to see the Hussey incident resolved.
The palace announced the outcome of the meeting on Friday: “Their majesties the king and the queen consort and other members of the royal family have been kept fully informed and are pleased that both parties have reached this welcome outcome.”
