In his first Christmas broadcast as king, King Charles III shed a tear as he gave a touching tribute to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth.

The monarch looked to be appreciative of the public’s love and support after her passing in September in a historic first statement, both for Charles personally and the UK as it is the first time any King has made a televised speech on December 25.

On Sunday, the Royal Family posted a video of the King’s moving speech to their official Instagram account with the caption: “Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition.”

“I am reminded of the deeply touching letters, cards and messages which so many of you have sent my wife and myself and I cannot thank you enough for the love and sympathy you have shown our whole family,” Charles said in a pre-recorded address from St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the Queen was laid to rest alongside her husband Prince Philip.

“Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition,” he continued.

Throughout his speech, King Charles paid tribute to the Queen’s legacy, recalling her confidence in the ability of “everlasting light” and her belief in the ability of individuals to make a difference in the lives of others. He also mentioned the “great anxiety and hardship” that many people go through.
