Rob Key has been announced to be England’s new Managing Director of cricket. After England’s Ashes fiasco, he succeeds Andrew Strauss, who served as interim managing director.

The former England batter will start as soon as possible and will also leave his position as a Sky Sports commentator.

“Key will be in charge of the England men’s cricket teams’ strategy as well as the performance pathways that lead to them. He’ll also play a crucial role in the upcoming High-Performance Review, which will begin soon “, in a press release, the England and Wales Cricket Board stated.

“It is a great honor to be given this opportunity.”

“The opportunity to have an effect and make a difference comes along just once in a lifetime, and I’ll give it everything I’ve got to help build the next great age of English men’s cricket,” Key said.

“I’ve had a great time with Sky and would never have considered leaving if it hadn’t been for this incredible opportunity.”

“I’d want to express my gratitude to Bryan Henderson and the rest of the team for their assistance and support”, he remarked.

Key, who made his first-class debut against Middlesex in April 1998, went on to score 19.419 runs at a 40.45 average. In 2010, he captained Kent and led the team to a second-division championship.

He went on to play 15 Tests for his country, with his greatest Test score of 221 coming against the West Indies in 2004 at Lord’s. He also represented England in six limited-overs matches.

“Rob stood out in a very competitive field after a lengthy recruitment procedure. His passion for the game and knowledge of it on a national and international level is unrivaled. He is a proven leader who blends an affable demeanor with fresh innovative ideas and tenacity, qualities that will serve him well. Rob will add a lot to the role, and I am confident that both the players and the staff will appreciate working with him. I’m confident he’ll like the challenge ahead of us”, Chief Executive Officer of the European Central Bank, Tom Harrison said.

“I’d want to express my gratitude to Andrew for agreeing to return to the post on an interim basis. It was helpful to have someone with his experience and skillset on hand during the changeover and recruitment process. He is still a valuable member of the English and Welsh cricket teams”, he added.
