Rome: Mihambo & Stahl lead loaded field event lineups

On June 9, the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala, part of the Wanda Diamond League, will feature a rematch between two world long jump champions and a rematch between the world and Olympic discus medalists.

Malaika Mihambo, a German star, has dominated the women’s long jump in recent years, winning European gold in 2018, global gold in 2019 (setting a new personal best of 7.30m), and Olympic gold in 2021.

Mihambo triumphed in Rome three years ago with a jump of 7.07m, her first seven-meter jump.

This year she will compete against Ivana Vuleta, who recently defended her global indoor championship, Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine, Khaddi Sagnia of Sweden, Jazmin Sawyers of the United Kingdom, Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands, and Larissa Iapichino of Italy.

All three medalists from last year’s Olympic Games and the 2019 World Championships are in the men’s discus cast, which is equally as star-studded as the women’s long jump.

In what will be his fourth appearance at the Golden Gala, world and Olympic champion Daniel Stahl will be looking for his first victory.

Compatriot and Olympic silver medalist Simon Pettersson, Jamaican world silver medalist Fedrick Dacres, Austrian world and Olympic bronze medalist Lukas Weisshaidinger, 2017 world champion Andrius Gudzius, and two-time European U23 champion Kristian Ceh will compete with the Swede.
