Raheem Sterling has put conversations about his future with Manchester City on hold as they seek a second Premier League trophy and their first Champions League title.
The England international’s current deal at the Etihad has just one year left on it, after earlier discussions fell through.
Before signing another long-term contract, he has stated that he wants to ensure that he will be able to play consistently and contribute to the squad.
That has certainly been the case in recent weeks, however Erling Haaland’s impending arrival in summer may alter the picture.
Sterling, 27, has been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid in the past, and has made no secret of his desire to play in Europe.
“Right now, I’m just thrilled to be playing and contributing to the squad,” he stated. “That, I believe, is the most crucial factor. I believe it would be selfish of me to discuss any contract situation at this time.”
“All I want to do is play football and see where we end up at the conclusion of the season.”
Sterling has started 20 of City’s 33 league games this season, with six more coming off the bench.
He believes the calibre of Pep Guardiola’s team helps to keep players sharp – but understands that no one will play every week.
“It’s a competitive team,” the former Liverpool player added. “You prosper because of the competition.”
“You might just want to keep playing, but you have to realize that there are a lot of guys on the team.”
Only Riyad Mahrez has scored more goals in the Premier League this season.
“To be playing and scoring and creating assists, as you mentioned, contributing to the team is a major thing,” Sterling continued.
“That’s where your confidence comes from, and right now I’m just pleased to be a part of the squad and try to contribute as much as I can.”
Sterling has had some of his best nights in the Champions League while at City, and is presently joint third on the list of Englishmen who have scored goals in the competition.
Only Paul Scholes (24) and Wayne Rooney (30) have more than him.
“It’s certainly a special competition – one that every English player aspires to be in,” Sterling remarked.
“I aim to offer my best every time I play in this competition.”
“As a human being, you must always strive to improve, and that is exactly what I do every season – I look for ways to develop.”
“All of these things are in motion, and if there’s a possibility I can get that English record, I’ll go for it”, he added.
