In an English County Championship match against Leicestershire on Friday, Pakistan’s Azhar Ali hit an undefeated double century to help Worcestershire rewrite the record books.
Azhar and former England Under-19 international Jack Haynes added 281 for the third wicket, breaking the previous mark of 278 set by Cyril Walters and Harold Gibbons against Leicestershire in 1934.
At stumps on the second day of the four-day match at New Road, Worcestershire were 456 for three, with a lead of 308 runs.
Haynes was finally bowled for 127, while Azhar completed his double century with a cover drive for four off Rehan Ahmed in the penultimate over of the day.
Azhar had faced 328 balls by that point, with one six and 18 fours, as well as sharing another century partnership with Brett D’Oliveira (52 not out).
Azhar arrived at Worcestershire’s headquarters, New Road, following a brilliant Test series against Australia, which featured a marathon 185 at Rawalpindi that lasted 11 hours.
The 37-year-old struggled at first with the shift to English conditions, scoring 34 runs in his first six innings for Worcestershire in the Midlands.
However, after smashing 92 against Durham, which included new England captain Ben Stokes, the former Pakistan captain has found his form.
