Monaco beat Angers 2-0 in Ligue 1 on Sunday, keeping their hopes of reaching the Champions League qualifying rounds next season alive. Captain Wissam Ben Yedder continued his remarkable scoring run.

After Abdoul Kader Bamba scored a goal just before halftime, Ben Yedder, 31, scored his 21st league goal of the season in the final half-hour.

With three rounds remaining, the Principality side leads third-placed Rennes on goal difference after the Bretons overcame lowly Saint-Etienne 2-0 on Saturday.

After their fourth defeat in six games, Les Verts, who won the last of their ten French crowns in 1981, remain in the relegation play-off spot.

In other matches, after leading 2-0 with 20 minutes to play at Montpellier, Metz failed to move off the bottom of the standings.

In the final 11 minutes, Arnaud Souquet and Elye Wahi scored for the hosts, denying the northerners three points.

Lille’s chances of returning to European play were harmed as they were defeated 3-0 by Troyes, with Florian Tardieu converting two penalties on either side of Ike Ugbo’s penalty for the club controlled by the same group as Manchester City.

Later, 19th-placed Bordeaux will face Nice, whose British owner Jim Ratcliffe launched a £4.25 billion ($5.3 billion) bid for Chelsea on Friday.

Second-placed If Marseille defeats Lyon at the Velodrome, they will be four points away from qualifying for the Champions League group stages.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice in a 3-3 draw with Strasbourg on Friday, but questions over the World Cup winner’s future in Paris linger ahead of the next summer transfer window.
