Canelo Alvarez recently expressed interest in a rematch with WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. The 31-year-old superstar, however, has opted to adhere to his original plan of battling Gennadiy Golovkin one final time.

Canelo recently spoke with the media about his future plans. Canelo signed a deal with Matchroom Boxing and DAZN earlier this year to face Bivol this month and Golovkin in September. Canelo wanted to show that he could beat Bivol after losing to him. He did, however, change his mind. He will now face Golovkin to defend his undisputed super-middleweight championships.

According to ESPN, Canelo has 30 days to choose between the two possibilities. The battle is expected to take place on September 17. Bivol will have to wait till the Golovkin fight is finished.

“Yes, without a doubt [in regards to the next fight with Golovkin]. We already had that contract, that agreement, so we have to keep doing what we’ve been doing, and I believe the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol are the two most important fights in boxing. According to ESPN Deportes’ Boxing Scene, Canelo commented. “We were defeated, but it doesn’t mean I won’t try again.” We’re going to do it again because perseverance is key.

“We will be back in September. We’ll announce the battle in the next days… today, tomorrow, the day after… we just have to wait a little bit.”

On May 7, Canelo fought Bivol for his second title in the light-heavyweight class. Bivol dominated, according to CompuBox, with 152 shots landing compared to 84 for Canelo. Bivol landed 46 jabs and only had one shot in the single digits. Canelo only landed double-digit punches twice.

Canelo and GGG’s third bout was always a possibility. The first fight between the two took place in 2017, and the result was a disputed split draw. In 2018, they fought again, although it was postponed for a few months after Alvarez tested positive for the prohibited chemical clenbuterol. Canelo won by unanimous decision.

Canelo has gone 7-1 since then, while Golovkin has gone 4-0. Golovkin recently defeated Ryota Murata in Japan to claim the WBA, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles. After delays caused by COVID-19 and injuries, Golovkin fought for the first time since 2020.

In just 11 months, Canelo became the undisputed super-middleweight champion. He won the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, and The Ring titles by defeating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant.

This will be Golovkin’s first bout at super-middleweight for the 40-year-old.
