Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer defeated Pumas UNAM of Mexico to win the Concacaf Champions League.

After a 2-2 tie in Mexico, Seattle won the second leg 3-0 at home, with two goals from Raul Ruidiaz and a late strike from Nicolas Lodeiro, for a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Peru attacker Ruidiaz told a foreign sports website that, “There are no words to describe what I’m experiencing right now.”

“The club earned its place in history; now enjoy it.”

The LA Galaxy were the last MLS team to win the competition, which was renamed the Champions Cup and contested under a revised format in 2000.

Seattle’s victory qualified them for the Fifa Club World Cup, making them the first MLS team to compete in the tournament.

China will host the next Club World Cup, but no date has been determined after it was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak and the 2022 World Cup this winter.

“The MLS deserves to win the continental championship, and this will go down in history,” Lodeiro added.

Concacaf is the North American, Central American, and Caribbean football regulating organization.

“It means everything,” said Stefan Frei, the Sounders’ goalkeeper. “It’s a Wednesday, and we’ve had 68,000 people in this building.”

“In this city, the passion is palpable.”

“I’m ecstatic for everyone that we were able to accomplish this for them.”

“At the end of the day, it’s all about trophies. We want to win trophies, and today is one of the most important,” he added.
