Emma Raducanu ís ‘overwhelmed’ by pressure: John McEnroe

Emma Raducanu is “overwhelmed” by the pressure of winning the 2021 US Open, according to John McEnroe, who also criticizes her “revolving door” coaching policy.

Raducanu was knocked out of the French Open in the second round by Aliaksandra Sasnovich 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday.

Since winning her first grand slam trophy last September, the British star has experienced hit-or-miss success, which American McEnroe attributes to public expectations that she should keep winning.

‘We have to keep a little perspective here,’ McEnroe told.

“She was unable to finish a match at Wimbledon last year due to stress, and it became too much for her.”

“Then she went out and did something that no one – man or woman – has ever done in 150 years of tennis: she came out of qualifying and won.”

“All of a sudden, there’s this strain on her, this expectation, and it’s become a little overwhelming.”

Raducanu and her coach, Andrew Richardson, parted after the US Open, and she went without a coach for a while.

She later hired Torben Beltz, but their working relationship has since dissolved, and McEnroe’s brief association with coaches is another source of concern.

“If I won the US Open after qualifying, I wouldn’t replace my coach for at least the next year,” he continued.

“So I don’t understand that move.”

“Her parents are obviously involved, and they know more than I do. However, I do not believe that a revolving door of coaches is good for any player, let alone a girl at this stage of her career.”

“We’ll have to wait and see, and perhaps she’ll find someone with whom she can spend some time.”

After recently worked with Jannik Sinner, Ricardo Piatti is rumored to be Raducanu’s next coach.
