Alistair Overeem recently discredited the world of professional wrestling. Now, the 42-year-old MMA fighter will compete inside the squared circle against the guy formerly known as Braun Strowman.
Authors of Pain, a former WWE tag team, just formed their own wrestling business. Former WWE performers Killer Kross, Nia Jax, Lana, and Mojo Rawley will compete in the Wrestling Entertainment Series. For the WES World Title, Adam Scherr (Strowman) will face Overeem in the main event.
At the age of 19, Overeem made his MMA debut against Ricardo Fyeet in 1999. He joined PRIDE in 2002 and went 7-7 in promotions. He became the Strike force heavyweight champion in 2007 after joining the company. Overeem also won the DREAM heavyweight championship.

Overeem debuted in the UFC in 2011 and won a first-round TKO over Brock Lesnar. He was 12-8 in the UFC, with one title fight. Overeem’s most recent fight ended in a TKO defeat to Alexander Volkov. Overeem has attempted to return to kickboxing after being released from his contract in ’21. He is a former K-1 World Grand Prix winner.
Overeem highlighted his dislike of wrestling in a recent interview with The MMA Hour. He was a vocal opponent of Brock Lesnar and CM Punk (both of whom fought in MMA and wrestling) and made harsh statements about the sport.
“The issue is, I started watching wrestling when I was 8, 9, 10 years old,” Overeem explained. “Ultimate Warrior Hulk Hogan is a major fan of those men. Man of Honky Tonk. Excellent and amusing. The Giant Andre After that, I stopped watching, and I haven’t watched since [1992, 1993, 1994].
“I started checking on YouTube again recently, and oh my God, this stuff is lame.” What these guys are doing is ridiculous. It’s phoney. It’s lame. It’s ridiculous… It is incomprehensible. It’s lame. It isn’t even a game. It’s ridiculous. It’s a poor performance. It’s ridiculous. Sorry to all WWE fans, but I’m just being truthful. I’m simply expressing my viewpoint. Isn’t it a free country?”
