Rangers are one of Scotland’s oldest and most successful clubs. Indeed, they are regarded as the club with the second-highest number of trophies in world football, behind Egypt’s Al Ahly.
Rangers and Celtic, their Glasgow rivals, compete in the Old Firm derby, and the two clubs are traditional Scottish football powerhouses. Both clubs hold the world record most domestic trebles, having achieved the feat seven times in their existence. Rangers have won a total of 55 league titles and have also won the Scottish Cup five times.
Rangers’ success is aided by a fervent fan base: 200,000 fans flocked to Manchester for the 2008 UEFA Cup final, which Rangers lost 2-0 to Zenit St. Petersburg. Thousands are expected to attend the Europa League final in Seville later this month.
Rangers went into administration in February 2012 due to a financial difficulty, and the club was disbanded later that year. Rangers Football Club was accepted into the Scottish Football League, and the following season they were promoted to the fourth tier. The club worked their way back up the football pyramid over the next four years, achieving three promotions and re-entering the Scottish Premiership in 2016. They won the Premier League during the 2020/21 season, bringing an end to Celtic’s reign of terror.
