New Zealand’s bowlers split wickets in their England tour opener against Sussex in Hove on Sunday, keeping the visitors in control.
Sussex were dismissed for 247 in response to New Zealand’s first-innings 342 for three, with Jacob Duffy, Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry, and Ajaz Patel all scoring twice.
In a match where the first day of four was washed away without a ball bowled, World Test winners the Blackcaps were 44 without loss in their second innings at stumps, a 135-run lead.
Duffy, who will make his Test debut against England at Lord’s on July 2 in the opener of a three-match series, was the pick of the attack, taking two wickets for 17 runs in 12 overs.
Kyle Jamieson bowled well but was wicketless with only 37 runs conceded in 14 overs.
Despite this, fellow seamer Matt Henry, who took two for 36 in 14 overs, stated that the Kiwis were happy with their overall performance.
“It was important for us to get that time in the legs and adapt to the conditions and the ball here so I think the guys would be really happy with that,” Henry said.
As for Duffy’s display, he added: “He has done a great job for a long time really at home and I think there’s no surprise that he would suit the English conditions as well, that beautiful outswinger he’s got.”
