Aroldis Chapman was throwing on the field before starting Tuesday’s series against the Rays at Yankee Stadium. According to Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake, it was the closer’s second time on the mound, and he’ll need one more session before facing hitters.

“So the biggest thing is just to get him to focus on straight lining his delivery to play and not getting too rotational, too big,” Blake said. “And I felt like he’s made a lot of progress in the last week or two as he’s gotten used to focusing on these things in his throwing program.”

Chapman has been on the disabled list for nearly a week and a half due to an Achilles problem. He’s been working on his delivery during his time on the IL. Chapman was hit by a pitch in each of the previous five games he threw before being placed on the disabled list. In 3.2 innings of work, he gave up six earned runs.

Chapman threw 25 pitches Tuesday, all of which reached 96 to 98 mph, according to Blake. He had some balls go berserk, which had previously been an issue.

“I feel like that was probably about B, B-minus command, all things considered, but better than maybe what we’ve been getting,” Blake said. “So it’s just a process for him. Probably got one more bullpen and we’ll see where he’s at.”

In his absence, Clay Holmes has stepped in as closer and performed admirably. In his previous 28 innings, during 26 outings, Holmes has not allowed a run to score.
