After Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, India appointed Jasprit Bumrah as their captain.
In Edgbaston, Bumrah will captain India for the first time in any kind of international competition. As the first bowler to lead India in Test matches since the legendary Kapil Dev in 1987, he is also poised to make history. Rishabh Pant has been chosen Vice-Captain.
Bumrah commented on being selected captain during the pre-game press conference, saying, “It is a big achievement, big honor. To play Test cricket was my lifelong ambition.”
“That I have been given the opportunity to lead the nation is a significant accomplishment. My career’s biggest accomplishment, in my opinion. I’m overjoyed.”
During the exhibition game against Leicestershire the previous week, Rohit tested positive for Covid-19.
He participated in the first inning despite testing positive, but the second inning was missed because he was placed in isolation.
According to a BCCI release, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will not play in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, which will begin on Friday.
“On Thursday morning, Rohit took a RAT Test, which revealed a COVID-19 good result. The forthcoming Test will be captained by Jasprit Bumrah, who will be assisted by Rishabh Pant,” according to the All-India Senior Selection Committee.
India will suffer a severe loss as a result of Rohit’s absence. During the initial part of the series last year, Rohit not only played the role of captain but also displayed outstanding form, collecting 368 runs, including a century in the fourth Test.
Mayank Agarwal has been named the replacement for Rohit by India. Agarwal has already left for England and connected with the Test team because there is no quarantine for foreign travellers.
Bumrah, who only made his Test debut in 2018, has already distinguished himself as one of India’s key red-ball players.
Even though he has only played 29 Tests, he is now the pace attack’s leader and is ranked No. 3 in the ICC Test Bowler’s rankings.
In the ODI portion of India’s tour of South Africa, he served as vice-captain as KL Rahul led the team in Rohit’s absence. During the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka, he served as Rohit’s backup.
India would win their first Test series in England since 2007 if they won or drew in Birmingham. Important ICC World Test Championship points are also at stake, with India now occupying the third-place spot.
Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England’s new captain and coach, have made a significant impact on the team, as proven by their 3-0 triumph against New Zealand, the current ICC World Test Championship champions.
On July 1st, the Test will start in Edgbaston.
