The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Morgan’s retirement on Tuesday.

Eoin Morgan said, “After serious contemplation, I’m retiring from international cricket immediately.”

“Ending what has been the most joyful and fulfilling chapter of my career wasn’t easy, but I believe now is the right time for me and both England white-ball sides I have led to this point.”

The English cricketer praised his family and teammates.

“From my debut with Ireland to winning the World Cup in 2019, I’ve never forgotten how important family support is. Thank you, Mom and Dad, Tara, and relatives around the world, for your unwavering support throughout my career. You all made this adventure possible.

“I must also thank my teammates, coaches, supporters, and those behind-the-scenes. I’m happy of my achievements as a player and captain, but I’ll remember most the moments I shared with some of the best people I know.

ECB Managing Director Rob Key thanked Eoin Morgan for his contributions to cricket.

Rob Key said it’s foolish to think Eoin’s legacy is merely winning the 2019 World Cup.

As with all great players and leaders, he transformed the way the game was played and how future generations will play it. His legacy will last for decades.

His career
The 35-year-old won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup as Captain in 2019 at Lord’s, England’s maiden world title. He won the 2010 ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup with England.

Morgan is England’s top run-scorer in ODIs and T20Is.

During his seven years as ODI captain, he led England to the top of the ICC rankings and won series against all the big nations.

He scored 6,957 runs in 225 ODIs, including 13 hundreds, averaging 39.75. Morgan won 76 of 126 matches as England ODI captain, the best victory percentage in the game’s history.

He captained the T20I team 72 times, equaling MS Dhoni’s record. In 115 matches, he scored 2,458 runs for England. He got 16 Test caps and scored two century over three years.

Morgan hit 17 sixes in an ODI innings against Afghanistan at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

He got a CBE for cricket in 2020.

Morgan played 23 ODIs for Ireland from 2006 to 2009.
