Manchester United announced their Premier League fixture list. It came as a bit of a surprise when great rivals Liverpool were included. In only their third game, they would pay a visit to Old Trafford. Last season, Jurgen Klopp’s team ended 34 points ahead of United and easily trounced them 5-0 and then 4-0 in their two games.
It’s the first time the teams have played in a season since 1972. Playing Liverpool so early in Erik ten Hag’s tenure may be intimidating. However, Thornley believes it may be advantageous to play them at a moment when no team has yet established its rhythm.
“To play Liverpool on the third game in, it’s really unusual,” he told “I don’t think any team is going to be in their full stride within the first six games of the season.
“I think the third game in is not a bad time to play them at all.”
“It’s a good fixture,” he said “We are playing at home, [we have] a new manager. [It is a] fresh start and exciting times, so I’m expecting us to win.”
Another former player, Quinton Fortune, believes United must approach the game with a positive attitude.
“When you play for Manchester United these are the fixtures you look forward to,” he said. “It should be the same every season.
“They have to adjust their thinking about what has happened in the past and rediscover the joy of playing with one other, together; that Manchester United family feeling.”
