Michael Hogan and Michael Neser both took three wickets for Essex in their 20 overs, allowing Essex to score fewer than a run per ball.

Essex struggled to get into the game due to a collapse at the start and finish of their innings, with only Matt Critchley making a significant contribution at a good rate.

Glamorgan accomplished their victory target of 114 runs in 19 balls and six wickets with six wickets to spare, with Sam Northeast top hitting with 44.

After putting Essex in to bat, Glamorgan grabbed control of the game in the first Powerplay. Hogan and Neser were outstanding, restricting the visitors to 14 for three at the conclusion of the sixth over.

Will Buttleman tried to slog sweep Hogan in the first over of his innings, demonstrating his aggressive intent. Despite his aggression, he never really got going, and he was stranded lbw for 2 from eight balls when he played his second big sweep shot off Hogan.

Rossington mistimed a pull shot, which was caught on the boundary by Neser, and Hogan took the second wicket.

Michael Pepper, who had scored a career-best 75 not out in Essex’s previous match in this competition, made 3 from 10 balls before driving the ball to Dan Douthwaite at mid-on off Neser’s bowling.

With a 58-run partnership between Paul Walter and Critchley, Essex were able to claw their way back into the game, but when both fell to Douthwaite in the space of three balls, Glamorgan were back on top. Walter lunged for a ball that swung enough to give wicket-keeper Chris Cooke an edge. Critchley smashed a cut shot straight at Marnus Labuschagne, who held on to the grab.

Essex had gone from 72 for three to 81 for seven in the space of ten balls when Daniel Sams was run out and Simon Harmer was caught behind off Hogan on the next delivery.

Essex concluded with a poor 113 for nine, with Neser having a career-best three for thirteen.

Essex gave themselves a chance to defend their low-scoring goal when Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd was removed for a four-ball duck by Daniel Sams, but a run of partnerships led by Northeast put Glamorgan in contention before big hits from Chris Cooke and Dan Douthwaite got them over the line.

Critchley, like Essex’s batting, was the best bowler for the visitors, finishing with one for 17 from four overs. Simon Harmer also bowled a tight stint, but there were never enough runs on the board for them to win.
