Alvaro Morata and Antonie Griezmann were instrumental in Atletico Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Getafe at home on Monday to begin their La Liga 2022-23 campaign on a victorious note.

Morata scored the game-opening goal for Atletico in the 15th minute to set the tone for the battle.

Getafe’s defence blocked a number of Atletico’s attempts to maintain the scoreboard’s integrity as the home team remained on the back foot for the remainder of the first half.

In the 41st minute, Getafe received the ball on the right flank and sent a cross to Borja Mayoral, whose shot hit the crossbar after bouncing excessively.

Enes Unal got space and ran with the ball on the left flank with no Atletico defenders in sight in the opening minutes of the second half, providing the home team with a key opportunity. The Turkish footballer was unable to score as the ball went wide of the goal.

Getafe subsequently lost the ball in the critical area, and Joao Felix provided a near-perfect pass to Morata, who made no mistake in putting the ball in the net to extend Atletico’s lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute.

Griezmann, who entered the game as a replacement in the 62nd minute, had a few minutes to make his presence felt as he evaded Getafe’s defences and scored Atletico’s third goal from around the box to make the score 3-0.

Athletic Club and Mallorca began their respective seasons with a scoreless draw in a match played earlier that day.

Each side had a lot of opportunities to advance the scoreboard, but neither side was able to capitalise and take the lead.
