Elena Rybakina has won twice since she won Wimbledon. On Monday at the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Masters, she beat Egyptian Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2.
The number 25 player in the world set up a second-round match with 2017 champion and eighth seed Garbine Muguruza.
Since she beat Ons Jabeur in the All England Club final, Rybakina hasn’t done too well. She lost in the first round at the Silicon Valley event and went 1-1 last week in Toronto.
Sharif beat the 23-year-old Kazakh because she played better in the second set, which ended with five aces and 13 winners.
“I was slow at the beginning but I got my rhythm and served well,” Rybakina said. “But my serve always helps me.”
As she gets used to her new status as a Grand Slam champion, the most recent winner said she is trying to look ahead in her career.
“Wimbledon gave me confidence but now I’m focusing on my other tournaments and trying not to think of the past,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to playing as much as i can here.”
