Andy Murray and doubles number one Salisbury took to the court with tie locked at 1-1, just as against United States in their opening tie.

They saved a match point in a nerve-jangling second set but eventually succumbed 7-6(0) 6-7(6) 6-3.

“It just sucks, because these matches have come down to a few points and they’ve not gone our way,” Murray said. “I have been fortunate to play a lot of these matches over the years, and, come through them.

“That hasn’t happened this time around, and I feel sad about that, because… I think we had the possibility to have a really good run here.”

The Dutch erupted in jubilation as they advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005, while Britain’s aspirations were dashed.

The Dutch team broke serve to take a 5-3 lead in the final, and they finished it off coolly on Koolhof’s serve.

Cameron Norrie was defeated by Botic van de Zandschulp, who had earlier defeated Tallon Griekspoor. Earlier, Dan Evans had handed Britain the lead with a convincing victory.

Similar to their loss against Jack Sock and Rajeev Ram on Wednesday, Murray and Salisbury came up just short one more.

Whoever wins group D will face the Netherlands or the United States on Saturday, with Britain’s match against Kazakhstan now merely a matter of pride.

From each of the four groups, two teams will advance to the knockout rounds, which will be held in Malaga from November 22 to 27.

Italy defeated Argentina in group A at the Bologna Olympics thanks to Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner, who are both among the top 15 men’s singles players in the world.

Italy took the lead as Berrettini defeated Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-3, and Sinner then beat Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 to end the tie.

Italy’s second victory this week ensured its place in the men’s competition’s final eight, with Sweden and Croatia battling for the other position after each team earned one victory.

The German team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz once more made headlines when they defeated Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen of Belgium in Hamburg with a decisive 4-6 6-2 7-6(5) victory.

In a nail-biting victory in their decisive doubles match against France, Krawietz and Puetz also guaranteed Germany’s place in the last eight from group C, along with Australia.
