Frances Tiafoe has said that he is beyond happy and almost in tears after knocking out Rafael Nadal from the US Open on Tuesday.

Tiafoe produced the performance of a lifetime against the former World No.1 and was in complete control of the match as he overpowered the Spaniard.

While Nadal did make a comeback in the second set, it wasn’t enough as the American secured the game with a score line of 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the fourth round.

This was the first time Nadal had suffered a defeat in a major this year after winning the Australian and French Opens in 2022. His exit from Wimbledon was due to an abdominal injury as he couldn’t compete in the semi-final match.

Speaking after the match, as quoted by Reuters, Tiafoe was in disbelief and said that he was beyond happy at that time. The 24-year-old American also said that he played unbelievable tennis against former World No.1.

“I don’t even know what to say right now, I’m beyond happy, I’m almost in tears,” Tiafoe, seeded 22, said in an on-court interview.

“I can’t believe it. He is definitely one of the greatest of all time. I played unbelievable tennis today but I really don’t know what happened.”

Tiafoe further commented and said that people had low expectations of him when he broke onto the scene and he wasn’t mentally ready for the big moments. However, the 24-year-old feels that he has been able to develop in the past few years and said he has a great team behind him.

“When I first came on the scene I felt like a lot of people had low expectations of me and how I would do,” he said.

“I wasn’t ready for it mentally, I wasn’t mature enough for those moments.”

“But these last couple years I’ve been able to develop and I have a great team behind me. I’ve been putting my head down and I’m happy with where I am in life.”
