Mark Boucher named head coach of Mumbai Indians
Mark Boucher will join Mumbai after stepping down as head coach of South Africa following Twenty20 World Cup 2022, which starts in October.
Boucher, a former wicketkeeper, took over as South Africa’s captain in 2019 and guided them to 11 test successes, 12 one-day international triumphs, and 23 T20 victory.
Being named head coach of the Mumbai Indians, according to Boucher, was a “honour and privilege.”
“Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of world sport,” he added.
“I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. It’s a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit.”
After Mahela Jayawardene resigned as head coach to take on a larger position at the franchise due to its growing international exposure, Boucher was hired.
Zaheer, a former fast bowler for India, was promoted from director of cricket operations to global head of cricket development.
Mumbai is one of the most successful teams in the IPL, having won the competition five times under the leadership of India captain Rohit Sharma. However, they had a poor 2022 season, finishing last in the standings.
