Gabriel’s goal lifts Arsenal past Chelsea and up to the top of the standings
On Sunday, at the Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, Gabriel Jesus’ close-range strike off of Bukayo Saka’s inswinging corner was enough to secure a well-deserved and significant victory for Arsenal.
In a London derby, Arsenal was the game’s dominant team and should have won with a larger margin. Arsenal now leads the league with 34 points after 13 games after the 1-0 victory.
Since taking over in December 2019, manager Mikel Arteta has never lost in any of Arsenal’s Premier League outings to Stamford Bridge. The Gunners came into this match with a record of three victories, one tie, and one defeat in their previous five competitive games. In their most recent match, they defeated FC Zurich 1-0 to advance to the round of 16 of the Europa League.
The visitors made an energetic start, as Ben White attempted two attempts on goal, the first of which soared over and the second of which drifted narrowly wide.
The next to try his luck shot over from the area’s edge was Gabriel Martinelli. When Gabriel Jesus surged into the area and dribbled past two defenders, he had a shot charged down, but Thiago Silva slid in to prevent it.
Jesus was given a chance as a result of Arsenal’s greatest play of the half. However, he was unable to stretch far enough to place his head on the tip of a Martinelli cross. He had avoided the offside trap and entered the area, but his shot was off.
The second half got off to a rather shaky start due to the wet ground, which may have caused some of the jumbled play.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek of Chelsea lost the ball to Jesus, who then stole it and shot at Edouard Mendy at the near post to win the corner. Gabriel slipped in to score practically on the goal line after Bukayo Saka’s corner evaded everyone.
Jesus, who may have gone nine games without scoring, put up another strong performance today. After a crazy dash down the middle of the field, he gave Odegaard a fantastic opportunity. When Martinelli may have been in a better position, the captain checked onto his left foot but shot over.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, who had been out for nine games with a calf injury, returned to the lineup, but Kieran Tierney took his spot for the final few minutes.
